World TB Day: Why Awareness Still Matters

World TB Day remains an important moment to reflect on the ongoing global impact of tuberculosis (TB) and to reinforce the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment. Despite being a preventable and treatable disease, TB continues to affect millions of people worldwide.

Did you know?

  • TB is the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious disease.

  • Symptoms of active TB commonly include a persistent cough, chest pain, coughing up blood, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.

  • TB is treatable; however, treatment requires a combination of antibiotics taken daily for a prolonged period, typically ranging from four to nine months.

  • While many people may be infected with TB without symptoms, approximately 5–10% will progress to active TB at some point in their lives, meaning they can develop symptoms and transmit the disease to others.

These facts underline the importance of early identification and prevention. Vigilance is particularly critical when it comes to testing close contacts of patients with confirmed active TB, as well as screening migrants arriving from countries with a high prevalence of the disease. Early diagnosis not only improves treatment outcomes for individuals but also plays a key role in preventing further transmission.

Last month, Bilthoven Biologicals and our partners across Europe proudly endorsed World TB Day, supporting initiatives aimed at raising awareness and strengthening public health efforts. By continuing to advocate for education, testing, and access to effective treatment, we contribute to the global effort to end TB and protect vulnerable communities.
