Oral Poliomyelitis Vaccine (Bivalent Types 1 and 3)
Poliomyelitis Vaccine (Oral) Bivalent Type 1 and 3 is indicated for active immunization against infection caused by Type 1 and 3 Polioviruses.1
OPV mimics the immune response following infection with wild polioviruses, but without causing disease. Poliomyelitis Vaccine (Oral) Bivalent Type 1 and 3OPV produces neutralizing antibodies against Type 1 and 3 Polioviruses and in the event of subsequent infection, this the neutralizing antibodies prevent the infection and protects the individual against poliomyelitis by preventing the spread of poliovirus to the nervous system.
Apart from this, OPV induces mucosal immunity by replication in the intestinal mucosa and lymphoid cells, and in lymph nodes that drain intestine.1
Bilthoven Biologicals produces drug substance for OPV.

Poliomyelitisvaccin
Polio is a serious and very contagious disease caused by a virus. It can affect the nervous system and sometimes cause paralysis very quickly. The virus spreads mainly when tiny bits of stool from an infected person get into another person’s mouth, often through unwashed hands or sometimes through contaminated food or water. Once inside the body, the virus grows in the intestines.
Early symptoms can feel like the flu and may include fever, tiredness, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and pain in the arms or legs. In rare cases, about 1 in 200 infections, polio can cause permanent paralysis, usually of the legs. Among those who develop paralysis, 5–10% may die if the muscles used for breathing become affected.
Polio mostly affects young children under 5 years old, but anyone who is not vaccinated—no matter their age—can get the disease. There is no cure for polio. The only effective protection is vaccination.2
