Tetanus
Tetanus is a serious infection caused by germs (called spores) from the bacteria Clostridium tetani. These spores are commonly found in the environment—especially in soil, dust, and animal or human waste. They can also be present on the skin and on metal objects like rusty nails, needles, or wire. Because these spores are very tough, they can survive in the environment for many years.2
Anyone can get tetanus, but it is especially dangerous for newborn babies and pregnant women who have not received enough vaccinations that protect against tetanus.
Tetanus is still a significant health problem in many parts of the world—particularly in areas where vaccination rates are low or where births take place in unclean conditions.2
